Twittering about Ravelry.com

May 21, 2009

So apparently about a week ago, someone on the Ravelry.com forum boards decided it would be fun to try to get knitting and the Ravelry site into the mainstream through the use of Twitter. Now, I realize that tons of people have been chirping about Twitter recently, but for those of you who aren’t familiar with it, let me see if I can give you a short description of what the heck it’s all about. Twitter is a real time platform that allows people from all around the world to post to an unlimited number of people short pieces of  information, thoughts, ideas, news, events, or just whine or brag about something that’s on their mind. It’s pretty cool stuff, and highly addictive. My boss made me look into it and start an account and honestly, I’m not sure what he realized he was getting me into! It’s like he handed me a needle and some crack and said – go see what this is all about. Ok – not really like that at all, except I am totally addicted to it. I was in Canada last week and had to turn off my phone cause I didn’t want to get wiped out with international data charges – IT WAS PAINFUL! I kept running into situations that I absolutely had to Tweet about, and I COULDN’T! You can’t imagine the agony I was in! But anyway, I digress….

So Ravelers around the world took up the challenge, and you bet your sweet ass, we got ourselves all the way to number two at one point! This screenshot was take at 4:15 and we’re still holding our own at number 3! I mean we beat out the finaly of American Idol for Pete’s sake!

That's right, Number 2!

That's right, Number 2!

And that, my friends, is the power of Twitter! And to all those people who laugh when I say I knit – do you have enough friends to make your little pastimes the second biggest topic of the day among more than 1 million people? Didn’t think so.

FYI, #ravelry was at number 1 for large chunks of the day. Two Ravelers took screenshots and posted them to FTLOR: http://www.ravelry.com/discuss/for-the-love-of-ravelry/643363/151-175#174

    Nice blog!
